Properties of CNG fuel

By its composition it is natural gas which we use for cooking or heating. It is ignitable and compared to petrol it is more difficult to ignite. It is lighter than air and when leakage, it is rapidly rising up. When combusted in spark ignition motor, it has very good anti-detonation properties. The running of motor in a car with CNG drive is softer, less noisy and last but not least the CNG motor is less mechanically stressed than the motor using liquid fuel.

CNG is ecological fuel

Vehicles with CNG drive contribute to slowing of global warming and produce substantially less health pollutants in comparison with the diesel or petrol powered vehicles.

  • by CNG combustion almost no solid particles are generated (carbon black),
  • CNG combustion produces less harmful green house gases, mainly sulphur oxides (-99 %), nitrogen oxides (-75 %), carbon oxides (-50 %), poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (-45 %) and solid particles (-86 %).

The environmental benefits include CNG into alternative fuels, suitable mainly for environmentally friendly urban and sub-urban bus transportation. In majority of European cities with more than 100,000 citizens there is in progress replacement of diesel urban buses for CNG powered buses.

CNG is economically beneficial fuel

  • our price for 1 m3 of CNG currently amounts to approx. 45 % of the price for 1 l of petrol
  • passenger or small utility vehicle consumes per 100 km approx. the same amount of CNG in m3 as of petrol in liters, i.e. CNG consumption (m3/100 km) : petrol consumption (l/100 km) = 1 : 1
  • by using CNG for powering the vehicle we can save up to 45% of fuel costs in comparison with the petrol drive,
  • trucks and buses with CNG drive can save fuel costs up to 25 – 30% in comparison with the same vehicles with diesel drive.

CNG is a safe fuel

Physical properties of natural gas cause that CNG is a more safe fuel than the classical, mainly liquid fossil fuels.

  • Natural gas is inflammable, however not classified as explosive gas.
  • Natural gas - compared to petrol – is more difficult to be ignited.
  • Natural gas is lighter than air, i.e. when leakage it is rapidly rising up (LPG is going down, it fills the space where in case of spark initiation it may explode, CNG after leakage disperses into the atmosphere).
  • Natural gas has very good anti-detonation properties when combusted.

Compressed natural gas CNG has a large advantage in comparison with other fossil fuels, mainly in that when it is combusted there are generated – at comparable energy effect - less pollutants. When using compressed natural gas for powering the vehicles, there are not created mechanical impurities, the fuel does not smell, the vehicle produces 60 – 80% less gaseous emissions. What concerns CNG use as motor fuel, it is important to know that it is inflammable and compared to petrol it is more difficult to be ignited. It is lighter than air and when leakage it is rapidly rising up. When combusted in the spark ignition motor it has very good anti-detonation properties (octane No. 130). The running of motor is softer, less noisy and last but not least the CNG motor is less mechanically stressed than the motor using liquid fuel.
